Beneath Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts

From the moment you begin the long journey down the stairs to the Magic Underground, it's evident something dark and mysterious is about to happen. The lobby area has posters of magicians and artifacts they may have used. Surprisingly, it's comfortable and friendly - I was expecting something more ominous. You'll likely be greeted by a magician who will entertain you with some sleight of hand card tricks, or you can run right up to the bar for a welcome beverage.

At about 7:00, the doors to the theater open and you can take your reserved seat. The theater is small and comfortable - there are no bad seats. You'll have the feeling you're part of the show and be tempted to try to see how the illusions are performed. Soon the lights dim and the show begins. Now, I was expecting a "cute" little show with done-over tricks we've seen a hundred times in the past. I didn't know Kalin and Jinger were named "Magicians of the Year" in 1998 - a title well deserved. This show is quite elaborate for such a small venue, with many illusions that left me wondering how they pulled them off.

For instance, look at the photo on the left and tell me how Jinger can fit into that tiny box. She didn't start out there. The box has compartments and parts of her were in 3 or 4 of them when the illusion began. Click on the photo to see it larger if you want. Although all of their illusions are mind boggling, I think this one was my favorite. With the others, I could at least imagine how they were done, but this one left me stumped. Maybe some day Kalin will reveal his secret to me so I can share it with everyone else - NOT!

After the show, Kalin and Jinger stay around for chatting and photos. It's a nice personal touch that you don't get to see with most entertainers. It's a highly entertaining show that you won't want to miss, and it even gets better: you can download a 2 for 1 coupon right here on visitreno.com
