Grammy Winning Country Band Diamond Rio Plays John Ascuaga’s Nugget March 3

Diamond Rio is an American Country music band whose music focuses on positive and inspirational messages. They grace the stage of the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 9 p.m.

Since they began in 1984 in Nashville, Tennessee, the group has been comprised of the same six members: Gene Johnson (mandolin, guitar, fiddle, tenor vocals), Jimmy Olander (lead guitar, Dobro, Danelectro, banjo), Brian Prout (drums), Marty Roe (lead vocals), Dan Truman (keyboards, organ, synthesizer), and Dana Williams (bass guitar, baritone vocals).

Diamond Rio has released seven studio albums, two greatest hits collections and “A Diamond Rio Christmas: The Star Still Shines,” a 2007 holiday album. The band has earned three platinum albums and won the Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year award four times as well as netting two Academy of Country Music Awards in the top Vocal Group of the Year category. When they debuted in 1991 with the hit “Meet in the Middle,” Diamond Rio became the first group in the history of country music to have a debut single reach No. 1. They continued to place 32 more singles on the Billboard chart, including “How Your Love Makes Me Feel,” “Norma Jean Riley,” “Beautiful Mess” and “Love a Little Stronger.”

Over the years, Diamond Rio developed a reputation as one of the industry’s most musically inventive outfits, a band of skilled musicians with a dedicated work ethic and the ability to find and record songs that struck a universal chord with audiences. They now bring that same impressive skill set to the Christian music market.

“The fact that we have recorded songs with positive messages is not by accident. We chose to do that,” says Johnson. “We’ve had songs that touched people beyond their ears, and got down into their hearts. When we did ‘Mama Don’t Forget To Pray For Me,’ we were getting letters from people talking about that song and how it touched them. I remember one specifically from a young girl who had run away from home. She called her mom and dad after hearing ‘Mama Don’t Forget To Pray For Me.’ After months of being gone, that song caused her to call home. That was a powerful thing. It makes you really stop and think. Songs touch people. Sometimes they can influence people’s lives more than we realize.”

“The Reason” is the most personal album they’ve ever recorded and opens a new chapter in the band’s impressive career. “It’s so personal and it’s very cool to lay this out there for all to hear,” says Williams. “It’s professing our faith publicly and it really feels good.”

Catch Diamond Rio live in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget, March 3, 2012 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $50 and are available online at janugget.com or by calling 800-648-1177 or 775-356-3300.

“Time Warp” host to speak at University of Nevada, Reno on nature of curiosity

Popular television science-show host, musician, artist, researcher, scientist, mathematician and roboticist Jeff Lieberman will be featured in the University of Nevada, Reno’s Discover Science Lecture Series on Feb. 9, which is free and open to the public. The co-host of the Discovery Channel’s “Time Warp” will present “Asking Why? The Nature of Curiosity.”

“We see less than 1 percent of the universe around us, yet we take for granted that we understand our world,” Lieberman said.

At the event, he will tell how scientific tools, such as high-speed photography, help people understand the true nature of phenomena as he explores the connections between the arts, sciences, education, passion, creativity and the potential for human consciousness.

“One of goals with the lecture series is to bring world-renowned scientists to the community who can give a new perspective or show how science relates to us all – Jeff Lieberman fits that goal to a tee,” Jeff Thompson, dean of the College of Science, said. “The audience should expect to be entertained and educated with his thought-provoking material.”

At MIT, Lieberman focused on the intersection between art and technology with his work at the Media Lab in the Robotic Life Group. There he headed design on the Cyberflora installation, a robotic flower garden that senses and responds to people in a lifelike manner, and the Motor Learning Robotic Wearable Suit, a robotic suit that teaches motor skills (dance, sports, rehabilitation, etc). He has also produced kinetic art sculptures, including “Absolut Quartet,” a music-making machine that incorporates the audience into the performance, and light bulb, an electromagnetically levitated and wirelessly powered light bulb.

Lieberman has four degrees from MIT: bachelor’s degrees in physics and math, and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and media arts and sciences. In his “Time Warp” show, he uses technology to see beyond the limits of normal human perception. He composes music in the duo “Gloobic,” and has performed in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He shows technological sculptures around the world to bring people an emotional and mystical connection with science and the universe.

Lieberman is one of many renowned scientists from around the country who have brought their knowledge to the Reno community in the series of lectures at the University of Nevada, Reno’s Davidson Mathematics and Science Center.

The lecture will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the College of Science’s Redfield Auditorium, Davidson Mathematics and Science Center at the University of Nevada, Reno. Admission is free. Parking is reserved for the event on the upper level of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex. For more information, call 775-784-4591 or visit http://www.unr.edu/science.

Super Diamond is coming to John Ascuaga’s Nugget February 11

You know you’ve made it big as a tribute band, when you’re mentioned in a Jeopardy question. "Q. Super Diamond honors him." “A. Who is Neil Diamond?" Question on Jeopardy, May 20, 2005. Super Diamond plays the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga’s Nugget February, 11.

Super Diamond has transcended the label of ‘tribute band’ and become one of the most popular live shows at major nightclubs. They have passionately immersed themselves in Neil Diamond's huge repertoire and deliver a high-octane show of unforgettable classics such as “Sweet Caroline,” “Forever in Blue Jeans” and many others

For over a decade the band has consistently performed sell-out shows at venues such as Irving Plaza in New York, 930 Club in Washington D.C., Bimbo's in San Francisco, and House of Blues venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland and Dallas to name but a few.

Super Diamond front man The Surreal Neil, Randy Cordeiro, astonishes audiences with his live interpretation of the ‘real Neil.’ Randy created the charismatic character when he discovered he had the uncanny ability to capture not only Neil Diamond's voice, but also his mannerisms and performance style. Randy formed Super Diamond with founding members Matt Tidmarsh (bass guitar), Rama Kolesnikow (keyboards), and his childhood friend James Terris (keyboards) and soon after attracted the stellar talents of Chris Collins (guitar) and Vince Littleton (drums). With a dedication to performing a dazzling, rockin' show and a reputation as one of the best live bands in the country, Super Diamond continuously draws full-capacity crowds and has a loyal, dedicated and ever-expanding fan base that bridges generations.

Super Diamond's dream came true when Neil Diamond joined them on stage for a surprise appearance at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Neil Diamond also praised the band when questioned about the success of Super Diamond by Katie Couric and Larry King on national television. Super Diamond was fortunate to be joined on stage by Neil Diamond a second time, at the premiere party for the movie Saving Silverman and has been delighted over the years to bring on stage current and former members of Neil Diamond's touring band.

OUTLAW COUNRTY STAR WILLIE NELSON TO PERFORM

The title of Willie Nelson’s solo debut on Blue Note Records, American Classic, refers as much to the man himself as to the storied Tin Pan Alley repertoire he explores on this elegant new set. While it’s common now for mature pop artists to attempt to put their own stamp on the American Songbook, Nelson practically invented the approach. He set the standard for, well, playing the standards more than thirty years ago with Stardust, perhaps this “outlaw” entertainer’s most daring move, an album that many industry pundits thought would get him laughed off the charts and out of the biz.

Instead, the Booker T. Jones-produced Stardust—which showcased material from the Gershwins, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael and Kurt Weill, among others, in spare, easy-going arrangements—became the most successful album of his career thus far. It reached #1 on the Billboard’s Country Albums chart; racked up more than five million in sales; earned Nelson a Country Male Vocal Performance Grammy; and, most significantly, helped to transform a colorful, middle-aged cult figure into a mainstream star. Encouraging Nelson to record Stardust was Bruce Lundvall, now Blue Note’s head, who had the prescience to sign Nelson to Columbia in the ‘70s and, thirty years later, offer him a home at Blue Note. Nelson’s first effort for the label was his acclaimed 2008 collaboration with Wynton Marsalis, Two Men With the Blues, a spirited live set that debuted at #20 on the Billboard pop chart (Nelson’s highest charting since Always On My Mind hit #2 in 1982).

Fans around the world know that the adventurous Nelson can sing just about anything—and with just about anyone he pleases. As he sees it, “The more songs you know, the more musicians you listen to, the more writers you hear, the better equipped you are to decide where you want to go next. That’s why I want to listen to everyone and everything and then decide which way I want to go. Then, of course, I might change my mind and go in an entirely different direction. But at least I have all these options.”

On American Classic, he’s joined, on vocals and piano, by Diana Krall in an intimate rendition of “If I Had You” that feel more like pillow talk than mere wishful thinking. He also duets with Norah Jones, countering playful protestations with romantic persuasion on Frank Loesser’s “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Backing musicians include such notable jazzmen as pianist Joe Sample, bassist Christian McBride, Krall guitarist Anthony Wilson, and drummer Lewis Nash; Nelson’s longtime sidekick Mickey Raphael, his memorable co-star on Two Men with the Blues, plays harmonica, adding evocative, bluesy inflections to “Angel Eyes” and “Since I Fell For You.”

Remarks LiPuma, “Willie is just the best to work with. He’s a very sweet cat. You just go in there and if you get something and it feels right, it’s right. You don’t belabor it. That’s the way I like to work, too. And that’s basically how it was—we went into Legacy and within four days we got all 17 tracks. We did the Diana Krall duet in L.A. One take and boom, we were finished. Twenty minutes. That was it. The rhythm section really had a sense as to what Willie was all about. All these guys were just so respectful of the guy and what he did. They’re great musicians in their own right but they all had huge respect for him and gave him all the room in the world.”

As a Nashville artist in the ‘60s, Nelson himself penned more than a few tunes that have arguably become American classics themselves, including “Crazy,” “Night Life” and the sublime “Funny How Time Slips Away.” But that was just the prologue for the iconoclastic singer-songwriter, who would redraw the borders of country music in the ‘70s after moving back to Texas and settling in the musical melting pot of Austin. Along with fellow traveler Waylon Jennings, Nelson was labeled the outlaw of the genre, but he was more visionary than rebel, especially with the way he attracted rock fans to take a closer look at country. He was celebrated for his work with buddies like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, but scaled even greater chart heights by singing, improbably enough, with Julio Iglesias (“To All the Girls I Loved Before”). Along with Marsalis, recent cohorts have included Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel and reggae icon Ziggy Marley.

Nelson ends the album with a re-interpretation of “You Were Always On My Mind,” the one-time Elvis Presley hit that Nelson took to #1 on the country chart and to Top Five on the pop chart in the early eighties. Looking back for a moment, Nelson decides, “Hopefully, I’m a better singer. Hopefully, I’m a better guitar player—you’re either going to get better or worse, you can’t stay in one spot. I like to think that the band and I have progressed a lot and learned a lot from doing these songs. There is truth in the statement that you learn by doing, so the more you do ‘em, the better you get.” American Classic, then, is clearly Nelson at his best.

Enjoy Willie Nelson’s unique sound for two soulful and spontaneous concerts, March 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $65 with premium seating available for $80. CLASSIC ROCK BAND, FOREIGNER TO PERFORM “ACOUSTIQUE SHOW” THE CLASSICS UNPLUGGED AT SILVER LEGACY

Sold-out shows on a recent world tour demonstrate the band’s formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel album sales, now exceeding 70 million. At Foreigner’s core is founder Mick Jones, the visionary maestro whose stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents continue to escalate Foreigner’s influence more than 30 years into the game. With a catalog of multi-platinum gems including “Cold As Ice,”” Juke Box Hero,” and” I Want To Know What Love Is” and critically-acclaimed wonders from the 2009 Can’t Slow Down album—Foreigner is a band continually forging new musical peaks. Comprising Foreigner’s dynamic lineup are founder-lead guitarist Mick Jones, lead vocalist Kelly Hansen, bass guitarist Jeff Pilson, multi-instrumentalist Tom Gimbel, keyboardist Michael Bluestein and drummer Mark Schulman. The original incarnation of Foreigner, formed by Jones in 1976, included fellow Brits Ian McDonald and Dennis Elliott, as well as Americans Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliardi and Lou Gramm. It was this mix of nationalities, and a feeling that music was coming from a different place, that inspired the band name.

Stoked with Jones’ song-writing mastery and Gramm’s fiery vocals, Foreigner embarked on an unprecedented course of larger-than-life rock and never looked back. Foreigner has 14 (and counting) Top 20 hits – some of them the most enduring songs in rock history – as well as 10 multi-platinum albums. Jones, who began playing guitar in his teens, is a Grammy and Golden Globe nominated songwriter and winner of the prestigious British Ivor Novello songwriter award. Foreigner’s debut album produced these hits: “Feels Like The First Time,” “Cold As Ice” and “Long, Long Way From Home.” The amazing Double Vision album followed, as did a string of more hits like “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You.” Those three songs helped give Foreigner 4 its impressive run at number one on the Billboard chart.

At the zenith of 80’s sound, Foreigner’s fifth album, Agent Provocateur, gave the world the incredible Number 1 global hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is.” This musical milestone followed the record breaking song “Waiting For A Girl Like You” (14 weeks, Billboard #2). As successful as the band has been with ballads, Foreigner is and always will be a high-energy rock band. The frenetic ride of the original Foreigner incarnation reached a milestone in 2002 when Gramm and Jones performed together for the last time. Gramm’s decision to leave the band prompted Jones to re-evaluate his life and his vision of Foreigner. With much support and encouragement, Jones rallied a newly-charged powerhouse lineup. A final touch to this intense re-vision was recruiting Kelly Hansen as vocalist, opening full throttle to reemergence of astounding music that speaks to both hard-core Foreigner fans and younger generations. Foreigner released Can’t Slow Down in 2009, which entered the Billboard chart in the Top 30 and had great success on radio with two Top 20 singles. The past two years have been an almost constant run of sold-out shows across Europe and the United States culminating with the release of a live album recorded in Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that spent thirteen weeks of 2011 in the Billboard Top 200. The September release of the band’s 3-disc set, Feels Like The First Time, includes an acoustic CD with an intimate and unique reinterpretation of many Foreigner classics; studio re-records by the new lineup and a live performance DVD showcasing the group’s exceptional live energy. Where will the future take Foreigner? Expect more blazing rock music, ferociously delivered, resonating globally, stronger than ever before.

To say that Foreigner is a must-see is an understatement. Join them live on stage on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $50 and $55 with premium seating available for $65. To reserve seats visit www.silverlegacy.com or www.ticketmaster.com or call 800-MUST-SEE (687-8733) or 775-325-7401. PIANO-DRIVEN POP-ROCK BAND, THE FRAY, TO BANG IT OUT AT SILVER LEGACY

The Fray earned their success the old school way, by getting out there and winning followers one gig at a time. Add to that a grassroots listener-driven campaign to get them a recording contract with Epic Records in 2004 and fame followed close behind.

Their first single, in 2005, from, How To Save A Life, “Over My Head (Cable Car)” climbed into the top 10 on the Billboard singles chart, has been certified double platinum and was streamed more than a million times on MySpace in just one month. MySpace has been good to the band: they’ve been streamed over sixteen million times, have more than five million views and have close to 300,000 friends on the network site translating into a group whose songs stand on their own, no clever marketing or catering to genre tastes. From the same album’s title track, “How To Save A Life,” has proven to be one of the bands greatest hits.

The band recorded their self-titled second album in 2009 with the single “You Found Me,” peaking at #7 on the Top 100 list and the single, “Be the One,” a song written in the space of twenty four hours. The Fray’s third album, Scars and Stories, is set to be released in 2012. It turns out that The Fray’s music resonates with lots of people; they are one of the most licensed bands with their music being featured on shows like Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy, What About Brian, NCIS, One Tree Hill and Bones.

Catch The Fray in the Grande Exposition Hall Saturday, February 18 at 8:00. Tickets are available for $49.50 with premium seating available for $59.50.
